Project Team Engages Over 2,500 Students in Anti-Drug Campaign at Five Schools
In an effort to combat drug abuse among students, a dedicated project team recently visited five schools in Anambra State, engaging over 2,500 students in an impactful anti-drug campaign. The schools included Nnamdi Azikiwe Secondary School Abagana, St. Mary College Awka, Community Secondary School Awka, Kenneth Dike Memorial Secondary School Awka, and St. John of God Secondary School.
The project team, consisting of passionate individuals committed to promoting a drug-free environment, sought and received oral approvals from the school authorities prior to conducting the campaign. These approvals affirmed the schools’ support for the initiative and their recognition of the importance of addressing the issue of drug abuse.
During the engaging sessions with the students, the project team introduced a thought-provoking analogy, likening a fresh leaf to someone who stays away from hard drugs and cannot be broken into pieces, while a dry leaf represents someone who consumes hard drugs and can be broken easily. This analogy effectively conveyed the dangers and consequences of drug abuse, leaving a lasting impact on the young minds.
As part of the program, students were actively involved in a stimulating question-and-answer session. Those who answered correctly were rewarded with notebooks, serving as both an incentive for participation and a symbol of encouragement for their continued dedication to leading a drug-free lifestyle. Additionally, slate banners were presented to the principals of each school as tokens of appreciation for their support in hosting the campaign.
To ensure the sustainability of the lessons learned during the campaign, the project team assigned the responsibility of forming clubs to the winners of the notebooks. These student-led clubs will serve as platforms for ongoing education, peer support, and advocacy against drug abuse within their respective schools.
The anti-drug campaign proved to be a resounding success, reaching a significant number of students and fostering awareness about the perils of substance abuse. With the combined efforts of the project team, school authorities, and students themselves, the fight against drug abuse in Anambra State takes a step forward in creating a safer and healthier future for the youth.
